Microsoftは米国時間2020年10月29日、最新のWindows Insider Previewで自動的にLinuxディストリビューションをインストールする機能を追加したことを、公式ブログで明らかにした。同社はWSL 2をコマンドラインから有効化する「wsl.exe --install」を導入済みだが、Windows Insider Preview ビルド20246では新たな動作を追加。「wsl --install」を実行するとWSL 2だけではなく、既定でUbuntuがインストールされる。

Python実装のPyston開発チームは10月28日、メジャーリリースとなる「Pyston 2.0」を発表した。

　PystonはCPythonのフォークで、LLVMおよびLLVMのJIT（Just In Time）実行エンジンを使用して構築されたPython実装。米Dropboxのプロジェクトとしてスタートしたが、2017年にDropboxがプロジェクトの支援を打ち切った。2020年はじめに一部の開発者が集まり、Pyston開発をフルタイムで行う企業を立ち上げたと報告している。

Pyston 2はUbuntu 18.04/20.04（amd64）向けをプロジェクトのWebサイトより入手できる。なお、Pyston 2は現時点ではクローズドソースで、バージョン1.0タグの下で古いコードを公開している。

"The Chromium browser is now available for both Linux Mint and LMDE," said Mint maintainer Clement Lefebvre, noting that the build process for the application and new package is a lengthy one "which can require more than six hours per build on a fast computer."

DebianリリースチームのPaul Geversは11月8日，Debianの開発者向けメーリングリストにDebianの次期リリース「Debian 11 "Bullseye"」の開発状況を報告する内容を投稿，2021年1月12日にBullseyeのフリーズを開始するとともに，「⁠Debian 13」の開発コードが「Trixie」に決定したことを明らかにしている。

Bullseyeは2021年後半の正式リリースが予定されているが，1月12日はリリースに向けての「最初のマイルストーン」（⁠Gevers）となり，以後，パッケージの大きな変更や新規追加は認められなくなる。今後のスケジュールでは2月12日のソフトフリーズ（マイルストーン2⁠）⁠，3月12日のハードフリーズと進むが，最終的に全パッケージの機能を確定するフルフリーズの日時は未定となっている。

また，リリースチームはBullseye（Debian 11⁠）⁠，Bookworm（Debian 12）につづくDebian 13の開発コードが「Trixie」となったこともあわせて発表している。Debianのメジャーリリースは，映画「Toy Story」に登場するキャラクターの中から開発コードが付けられるが，Debian 13にはプラスチックのトリケラトプスの人形であるTrixieが選ばれた。

The MX Linux 19.3 distribution has been released today as the latest update to the MX Linux 19 “Patito Feo” series of this Debian-based, systemd-free operating system for personal computers.

Packed with all the latest software and security updates from the Debian GNU/Linux 10.6 “Buster” release, MX Linux 19.3 is here with new kernel versions patched against the recently discovered BleedingTooth security vulnerability affecting certain Intel processors.

While the standard ISO images ship with Linux kernel 4.19.152 LTS, the more advanced AHS (Advanced Hardware Support) edition is powered by Linux kernel 5.8.14. The latter also comes with a newer Mesa graphics stack, version 20.1.8, as well as recent X.Org Server graphics drivers.

「USBメモリ」と「USBメモリ型SSD」は何が違うのか?

LinuxといったOSのインストールメディアとして利用する場合、USBメモリでないと利用できない可能性はある。今回、USBブート可能なメディアを作成するツール「Rufus 3.13」において試したところ、手持ちのUSB SSDは3台とも認識されなかった(ただWindows 10のメディア作成ツールは問題なく認識した)。

この件についてミネソタ大学は、コンピューターサイエンス部門の学科長であるMats Heimdahl氏と副学科長Loren Terveen氏の連名で、状況を深刻に受け止め、Linuxカーネルコミュニティに懸念を引き起こすような調査方法がなぜ承認されたのかといった経緯を調べ、できるだけ早く報告すると声明を出しています。

Dear Mozilla, Please Remove This Annoying ‘Feature’ from Firefox

Despite its receding user base, Mozilla Firefox has remained my primary browser. Mozilla has revamped Firefox in the last couple of years and have added several features to it specially focused on protecting user privacy. I respect that.

However, there is one ‘feature’ that annoys the hell out of me. This so-called feature relates to the auto-update of Firefox in the background.
